On July 4, 1942, in the midst of World War II, the American Volunteer Group, Flying Tigers, was absorbed into the United States Army Air Forces as the 23rd Fighter Group.  Building on a volunteer legacy of selfless heroes, the 23rd Fighter Group generated a legacy in the China-Burma Theater comparable to few other combat organizations in the world.  Over the past 75-plus years, the Flying Tigers have seen their missions, location, composition, and conflicts change.
 
Through it all, the volunteer legacy of the Flying Tigers has become the standard of excellence and expectations for the United States Air Force.
