Perspective and Goals in Simple Things

Perspective and Goals in Simple Things

Often, even the simplest and most tedious of tasks provide much-needed relief from 'the grind' of modern life, and provide us with a moment to reflect on what matters.  They also present us with opportunities to stretch ourselves in the same moment. My wife and I recently found one such task in a dusty field in the middle of nowhere. We were returning from a short trip to the Teton Valley on the West side of the Teton Range in Eastern Idaho/Western Wyoming recently, a valley full of lush fields, amazing vistas, beautiful skylines, and abundant wildlife.  I had given a small presentation to an unnamed board, and we were in a hurry to get home to kids, family chores, and sleep…

Annual Vector Check

Excellence, Individual Greatness, Leadership, Personal Value, Vector
I hate New Year's Resolutions.  They are so often a list of wishful thinking, of things we did not do last year that we want now to commit to doing in the dead of winter-- to lose weight, to work harder, get up earlier, save more money, or whatever shortcoming we find in our lives on December 31.  While none of those things are evil, and they may represent steps in the right direction, the approach is less than effective. Holy Vector–The Guiding Star of That Holy Night

Christmas, Holiday, Personal Value, Vector
Over two millennia ago, a young child was born to a poor carpenter and his young wife.  Born in a stable with the animals, there were no royal trappings around the babe that would come to be known as the Son of God, the King of Kings.  Of humble birth, normal upbringing, and secluded family life in an obscure town of a captive nation, no other birth has received so much recognition as His.  Wise Men from afar who had studied ancient writings and prophecies searched for the young king to worship him and bring him gifts.  Jealous kings sought Him to end the threat to their own power.  Prophets for centuries before His birth predicted His coming and what it would mean…

Optimum Cruise–Avoiding the Sabre Dance in Flight and Life

Flight, Leadership, Vector
As a pilot, the scariest flight video I've ever watched is a slow speed F-100 doing a "Sabre Dance".  Slow and low to the ground, trying to land, with the wings teetering on a stall, often the pilot does not walk away alive.  A rare occurrence, but common and deadly enough to make any pilot respect the twenty feet above touchdown and the accompanying speed of a fighter aircraft. This dangerous phase of flight is partially due to what is known as the 'region of reverse command'.  It is a terrible place to fly, but almost as poor of a speed at which to run your business and life. In simple terms, an aircraft in the region of reverse command is flying so…
